A perfect Sunday with... Ruairí Coleman

Every week, a top writer, artist, actor or creator reveals how they’d fill their perfect Sunday, sharing their favourite comfort reads, movies, food… anything that would make their weekend great.

Today, it's the turn of my awesome collaborator on Iron & Frost, comic artist Ruairí Coleman!

Ruairí's perfect Sunday… brunch

No light snacking for me on a Sunday, I want the proverbial "Sunday dinner." I'm talking roast turkey and ham, mashed and roasted potatoes, veg and gravy. And, don’t judge me, but I'm not cooking it either; as the resident chef in Teach* Coleman, I will defer my duties to one of the delicious takeouts in town, preferably one that makes a mean cheesecake for dessert.

*Teach is the Irish word for House.

Ruairí's perfect Sunday… read

Normally I read non-fiction but on my Perfect Sunday I'd break out an old favourite from my fiction catalogue: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Ruairí's perfect Sunday comic

How to pick just one?!

Are we talking single issue of a comic, or a comic series/graphic novel/TPB that you could binge over the course of an hour or so?

If it's a single issue, I'd likely pick something like X-Men #62 drawn by one of my heroes, Carlos Pacheco.

If it's a series/graphic novel/TPB I'd go with my Clone Saga Omnibus (I'm a ride or die Ben Reilly guy).

Ruairí's perfect Sunday... movie

On Sundays I want to watch a long, slow-burner kind of movie where I can really sink into the sofa and soak in the cinematography and performances. Something like Heat or Casino, maybe The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (what a soundtrack!), or – diving back a little further – The Life And Death of Colonel Blimp.

Ruairí's perfect Sunday... TV binge

If it's TV, give me plenty of laughs, like a rewatch of Friends, The Office or, one of my personal favourites, Scrubs!

Ruairí's perfect Sunday… podcast

Admittedly, I have low mileage for podcasts but Sonic The Comic is one that I love: it's both a comic review show (specifically the British Sonic the Hedgehog comic from the 1990s) and a trip back in time for us elder Millennials.

Ruairí's perfect Sunday… album

Another tough one! Spotify playlists and algorithmically curated mixes are all well and good, but it's hard to beat a no-filler, unskippable album, isn't it? The hard part is narrowing it down to just one!

I guess one I go back to a lot, and I love listening to it on long drives (another good way to spend a Sunday) is This Empty Northern Hemisphere by Gregory Alan Isakov.

Ruairí's perfect Sunday… treat

That would involve my wife taking the kids out for the day and me kicking back with my PS4, trying to finish one of the games left incomplete since said kids came along – Final Fantasy VII Remake, Red Dead Redemption 2 or God of War!

IRON & FROST #1 drawn by Ruairí Coleman is out this coming Wednesday, 15th October 2025 from Marvel Comics.

COLD AS FROST, HARD AS IRON!

X YEARS LATER, after 3K's devastating terrorist attack cost Tony Stark and Emma Frost everything, the Heartless Queen returns to what remains of her past.

Secrets hide in the ruins of New York. The HELLFIRE CLUB has a dangerous new leader.

Ruairí Coleman is a husband, father, comic artist and proud Irishman.

After a detour into Psychology and Counselling at University, he decided to pursue his dream job and has now been working professionally in comics for over a decade, drawing fan favourite characters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel and Superman.

Recently, Ruairí also had the opportunity to turn his hand to writing with the second volume of ASTONISHING TIMES, the Comixology Originals series he co-created with Frank Barbiere and Arris Quinones. He liked it very much, and hopes to make a habit of it some day.

You can follow Ruairí's musings in his free newsletter SWINGIN' LEAD or during his sporadic spurts of activity on social media.
