Five things for Friday #6: Suede, puppets and doing it yourself!

Even a little bit of Vic and Bob, too!

Five things for Friday #6: Suede, puppets and doing it yourself!

Hello there!

I’m back with another five things I’ve really enjoyed and hope you will too!

Let’s go!

  1. Music: We saw Suede this week as the OG britpop band kicked off their UK Antidepressant tour and were as brilliant as ever. Brett Anderson attacked each track with his trademark energy — dancing like the lovechild of Mick Jagger and David Bowie, and wowing us during a rendition of Life is Golden by putting down the mic and singing totally non-amplified. You could have heard a pin drop.

Afterwards, I went on a deep dive of recent interviews and hit the jackpot with this chat with bassist Mat Osman. Did you know how many tracks Suede write for each album? Fifty.

    FIFTY!

There are loads of nuggets about pushing yourself and never resting on their laurels, which is probably why Suede continue to innovate rather than just sticking to the same old sounds. Read ‘Suede are having the best decade of their life’ by Lily Moayari here!

  2. Film: Have you seen Iron Lung yet? The indie sensation has been going gangbusters at the box office and all without the muscle of a major studio. This interview with producer, writer, director, editor and star Markiplier is fascinating, especially for anyone wanting to go it alone.

  3. Creativity: An incredibly honest piece by Alec Worley about a jobbing writer moving from work-for-hire gigs to writing original fiction! Plus, there’s the intro of Alec’s latest sword and sorcery tale in New Edge magazine.

There’s a lot in here, from the reality of what original work means for a WFH writer constantly having to look for paydays to the pros and cons of outlines and how stories without a plan can run away with themselves. Recommended!

  4. TV: How Vic and Bob made one of my favourite TV shows of all time. Uvavu!

  5. Podcast: We Contain Multitudes is back with another cracker — Mary Robinette Kowal geeking out about puppetry, including lots of wonderful snippets about Little Shop of Horrors and even The Sound of Music. It had me googling ‘puppet burlesque’ and ‘puppet slams’ as apparently both are things that you can go to! Very excited to discover Bristol has a puppet workshop!

Let me know if any of those catch your eye — or reply in the comments with something I should be reading, watching, or listening to next. You can also just hit reply to the email.

I'll see you next time, when I'll reveal when I morphed into a rabbit in the headlights recently – and how I got moving again.

Until then, look after yourself and each other!
