Pixie wells, Jedi battles and a brand new anthology

Hello there!

It's my first week back at my desk after a week's holiday where we wandered bookshops, museums and National Trust estates, discovering along the way what terrors lurk if you follow signs to a Pixie Well...

Oh, the horror. Legs that white can't be natural!

There was also a LOT of tea and cakes!

New author photo?

Now back home, most of the week has been spent in meetings, although the first job on Monday was making edits to the first issue of my next Marvel mini-series.

More on that soon!

And talking about future attractions...

CULLEN BUNN TEASES ACTION HORROR ANTHOLOGY – I'LL KILL YOU LAST

Psst! Author and comic writer Cullen Bunn teased a new anthology on his newsletter earlier this week...

... and just look at the first name on the contributor list.

That's right! It's me!

Cullen will be launching I'll Kill You Last later this year on Kickstarte, and I'll share more information as it becomes available.

In the meantime, here's what Cullen said:

Do you love the high-octane action movies of the 80s? Larger than life heroes! One liners! Car chases! Big guns! Bigger muscles! Muscle car chases with even bigger guns!

Do you love bloodcurdling terror? Vampires! Demons! Werewolves! Demonic vampires who turn into werewolves by the light of the full moon!

Do you bleed Cannon films? Do you bleed horror?

If so, this is the anthology for you!

I’ve brought together twenty-two of the most exciting writers around have come together to bring you horror stories... that are firmly rooted in the sensibilities of 80s action movies! Get the popcorn ready! The action is big! The frights are even bigger!

UNION JACK THE RIPPER

Jayme E. emailed with a question:

I was wondering if Union Jack the Ripper: Blood Hunt would be published in a physical collected edition or if it would only be in separate electronic issues.

Thank you so much for taking the time for answering. Love your work!

And thank you for the kind words, Jayme!

And yes – Union Jack the Ripper has already been collected, although it isn't entirely obvious where.

It's bundled with the Dracula mini from the same Marvel event – Dracula: Blood Hunt.

Here's the cover you're looking for!

How to increase your chances of working for Star Wars

Lucas X. also got in touch:

Hiya! I'm Lucas, I'm an author (and part-time shoe salesman, but that's less important).

If you have the time, I've got a couple questions about your writing (specifically the High Republic/ Star Wars novels) I'd like to ask.

Here it is:

How did you get picked to work on a Star Wars novel, and what can I do to increase the chances of that happening for me? Is it all just who you know, publisher talking to literary agent, or is there a submission/pitching process?

About me & my writing: I'm about to self-publish my first novel and I've been published in F&SF, but I don't have a lot of other traditional publishing credits (not for lack of trying, I've been querying a pair of books for a number of years).

I've loved reading the High Republic stories that you and others have contributed to, and I want to join that illustrious list of writers.

Any advice, tips, general wisdom, or Force-related meditations would be gratefully accepted.

I really appreciate your time; I know you probably get a lot of hopeful would-be writers in your inbox.

First and foremost, people need shoes AND shoe salespeople, part-time or otherwise!

As for how I got picked to work on a Star Wars novel, well, it was because I'd had a lot of experience writing for big IP such as Doctor Who.

In fact, it was ten years ago that I first received the call from Egmont asking me to pitch for what would become Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space. From there, I had to do a test piece that made the grade, leading to me signing the contract in June 2015 while I was attending my first San Diego Comic Con!

What a year!

As I always say in these situations, the way to write for franchises such as Star Wars is to build a reputation with other work, so you're doing the right thing getting work out there! I would suggest that you need to go further down the traditional publishing route to have a shot at the moment. That's what most big franchises are looking for right now.

I've written a couple of other posts about my own personal journey, including how I became a writer and advice on how to write for an established IP.
