Stop Press – Fangoria announces Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands

Yesterday was Beltane, a day of light and life – basically the flip side of Halloween – so what better time to announce my latest spooky Star Wars series for Dark Horse?

And what better venue than Fangoria, a magazine I've read pretty much all my horror-loving life!

As Maggie Boccella of Fango scooped, Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands is a three-part mini-series launching September 1st from Dark Horse.

Each 30-page issue features an incredible cover by my Tales from Vader's Castle bro Francesco Francavilla and sees a different generation of Star Wars heroes take on the galaxy far, far away's latest big bad, who was designed by none other than my oh-so-creative chum Iain McCaig – the genius who designed Darth Maul!

Here's the official description:

On the planet Ryloth, Twi’leks speak in hushed tones about the Nightlands, the spectral realm where their spirits retire after death. According to legend, there are certain nights when the veil between that haunted place and the land of the living is so thin that one can communicate with the other side. Enter: The Nightlander, a Star Wars boogeyman who seeks to possess a powerful, living host and bring despair to the galaxy!

A nightmare in three parts

Issue one sees Obi-Wan and Anakin first face the Nightlander on Ryloth, with beautiful art by Bram Stoker Award-winner Soo Lee, who I first worked with on Tales from the Death Star.

Then the action shifts in issue 2 to a time just after the Empire Strikes Back, where Luke and Leia find themselves plunged into a nightmare of their own.

Art is by the incredible Vincenzo Riccardi, who I've worked with for years, from the pages of Scream to Star Wars: The High Republic – Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone #4.

Finally, everything comes together in issue 3, which sees me teaming up once again with Robert Hack, whom I first collaborated with in the original Tales of Vader's Castle, where Lucasfilm allowed us to retell The Wicker Man with Ewoks!

Yes, Ewoks. Really.

This time, Robert and I are telling the story of what happens when General Organa, Rey and Finn meet the Nightlander just prior to the events of Rise of Skywalker. I've been wanting to tell sequel stories in our Halloween specials for so long, and this is finally my chance – one of TWO stories set in the sequel era I have coming out in 2025.

Yup, you heard that here first, faithful subscribers! The sequel love is real in this house!

(Oh, and wait until you see Francesco's cover for this one. It arrived in my inbox late last night and, trust me, sequel fans are going to flip!)

A spooky holiday for Star Wars

Here's a little bit of what I told Maggie about the series:

"It’s a true honour to introduce a brand-new spooky holiday to the galaxy far, far away. After all, why should Life Day have all the fun? Star Wars deserves a spooky season too!"

You can read more on the Fangoria website, but in the meantime, give your eyeballs a treat and gaze upon Francesco's spine-chilling cover for issue one, plus the supercool Iain McCaig concept variant!

Creepy, huh?

And, of course, this means I can finally complete my Star Wars Halloween graphic that I feel like I've been teasing for years!

More on Tales from the Nightlands when I can.

In the meantime, watch out for the Nightlander. She's out to get you!
