Updating my Now page for October

Keeping track of what I've been doing and what's on its way!

Updating my Now page for October

Last month, I started a /NOW PAGE, an idea I discovered via educator Martine Ellis and invented by writer Derek Sivers

I use it to share what I'm up to, and have just updated the text on my website so, as promised, thought I'd share it with you, my lovely subscribers.

SO WHAT AM I DOING?

September ended up being slightly more manic than expected, mainly due to life throwing all manner of spokes in the wheels — from family emergencies to a few frustrating work hiccups.

Along the way, however, I managed to submit the outline for Project: Avarice, my next IP tie-in novel, which the license holder loved. Phew! I’m set to start writing that in a few weeks.

Work continued on the TV pitches I’m developing with George Mann: three live-action shows (a cosy-crime drama, a supernatural crime series, and an epic fantasy) and two animated series (both dark fantasy — one historical, one contemporary). We’re busy breaking pilots and writing the pitches, ready to hopefully deliver over the next few months.

September also saw the launch of my latest Star Wars Halloween mini-series Tales From the Nightlands, which got some lovely reviews:

There's was also the announcement of a project I’ll be writing in October: a brand-new novelette featuring Robert E. Howard’s classic hero, Solomon Kane.

When the Blackthorn Meets the White will be published as part of Titan Books’ Heroic Tales digital line in April 2026.

WHAT HAVE I GOT COMING OUT IN OCTOBER?

October features a bumper crop of releases from yours truly:

  • Splitting Heirs, my Demon short story in DC’s Zatannic Panic with art by the wonderful Don Aguillo is out today!

WHAT I'VE BEEN WATCHING

  • With Autumn back, The Great British Bake Off, Strictly Come Dancing and All Creatures Great and Small have returned to the Scott household TV schedule. Pure comfort viewing.
  • I enjoyed The Conjuring: Last Rites, a fun send-off to a franchise I’ve loved. Conjuring II is still my fave, though. Wish we’d got the Crooked Man spin-off they promised.
  • I lapped up Bookish, a perfect golden crime series set in 1950s London starring Mark Gatiss. Roll on series two!
  • My pal Mark Wright introduced me to the Icons Unearthed series on Prime and sso I dived into the first couple of episodes of the Dark Knight strand, which focused on one of my all-time favourite movies: Batman ’89.

WHAT I’VE BEEN READING

I wasn’t able to do a lot of reading purely for pleasure in September, as most of the books were tied into research for future projects, including revisiting all of REH's Solomon Kane stories from the beginning. One non-research highlight was Nobody’s Hero by M.W. Craven, which I reviewed here

I also finished The Wheel by Jennifer Lane, which I’ve been dipping into for the best part of a year. Not because it's been a slog — far from it — but because each chapter ties into a festival from the pagan Wheel of the Year. I've been reading them as the celebrations rolled around... although I confessed, the moment spooky season hit, I couldn't help but read to the end, with Jennifer's witchy journey finishing on Samhain.

WHAT I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO

As well as my usual crop of podcasts, I binged Marianna in Conspiracyland, the disturbing story of Paloma Shemirani, who died following refusing chemotherapy, a sad account that highlights the murky world of anti-medicine propaganda online.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN ENJOYING

I managed to visit the brilliant Lost Spells exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath before it closes on 5th October, showcasing the original art from Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane’s book of the same name. Foxes, hares, owls and corvids? It’s like someone curated an exhibition just for me — while also providing inspiration galore for my growing obsession with lino printing.

And speaking of lino printing, I was really excited to be back in the studio under the watchful eye of my teacher Kerry Day for a new term of night classes. This time I'm tackling my first reduction print, a technique where a single block is gradually carved away with each new layer of colour, building up a multi-coloured image print-by-print. It's a nerve wracking process as there's no going back once you've made the cut, but I'm enjoying the challenge. The first step is the easiest!

That's all for now, although don't forget to check out this month on the High Republic calendar!

Until next time, look after yourself and each other!
