B for Bertie reporting for duty!

A new miniature, a favourite character, and a chance to try some new techniques

B for Bertie reporting for duty!

Time for another Miniature Monday and the fruits of my weekend labour!

B for Bertie is one of my favourite characters from Konflikt '47, the Weird World War tabletop game George Mann and I have been working on as creative consultants since last November.

We were up in Nottingham at Warlord Games HQ on Friday for a full-day story and strategy summit where we were helping plan the end of the first phase of Konflikt '47 lore. As we were leaving, K47's brilliant writer and lore master, Dan Hewitson, thrust a sample of the B for Bertie miniature into our hands ahead of its official release this month, and I couldn’t wait to get some paint on it.

In the game, Bertie started its war as part of the British Commonwealth automated infantry. Left behind after a skirmish with Axis Panzermechs, Bertie was thought destroyed in combat. Seriously damaged, Bertie's primitive automated system glitched, leading to something of an awakening for the factory-made automaton. Looting the remains of its fallen automated comrades, Bertie repaired itself and strode off on a new mission.

As for his mousy little buddy... well, that's a story for another day, and one I'm particularly excited for you all to discover.

I'm pretty pleased with how my miniature painting is going. I've definitely been leaning heavily on Army Painter Speed Paints but am starting to experiment with acrylics, which is pretty scary for a noob like me. Painting Bertie's eye – not to mention the mouse tail – was pretty nerve-wracking, but I did it! The figure also saw me trying my hand at wet blending for the first time. It was a little trial and error, but it's left me wanting to try more.
