By the power of Grayskull...

Hello there!

Welcome to my all-new monthly round-up! April has been fun, writing a new comic mini-series and making plans for the rest of the year. There's also been a ton of news.

Let's get to it!

In this edition, we have:

RETURNING TO VADER'S CASTLE

My latest Audible Original is out now! Terror on Mustafar is narrated by the wonderful Mark Thompson and features a cover by Jake Bartok that gets up close and personal with none other than Darth Vader himself!

Here's the blurb:

Imperial cadets are in awe of the Empire’s mightiest warrior: Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith.

But when a few young cadets find themselves trapped on the lava-filled planet of Mustafar, and in the shadow of Vader’s castle, they will soon discover that the Empire is not what it seems.

Now, they must work together to escape from an evil scientist, his horrendous experiments, and the fearsome Darth Vader!

Exclusive from Audible, Star Wars: Terror on Mustafar is available right now!

GODFATHER OF HELL NOW AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER

Vault have solicited the graphic novel of Godfather of Hell, my neo-noir supernatural thriller co-created with Bram Stoker award-winning Pius Bak, on sale 25th August, 2026.

We originally launched the book as a series last year until it fell foul of the Diamond bankruptcy – but now we can tell the story in full!

Waking up in Hell, Dario faces a future of pain and suffering… unless he can turn eternal damnation into a business opportunity. The Devil is in the details, and Dario’s dealing a dangerous hand when it comes to gambling with the biggest guy in the down below: Satan himself. It’s a high-stakes game that he can’t afford to lose. Lose the play, lose your soul. Can this sinner become a winner?

Just remember: It’s not personal – it’s strictly business. Mostly.

Godfather of Hell: where gangster noir and exorcist terror collide!

Talk to your friendly comic book store to order today.

In the meantime, here's an exclusive sneak peek of one of the pages with art by Pius and colours by the incredible Raúl Angulo!

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

Slashfilm dropped the news about the new Masters of the Universe Genesis series from Dark Horse Comics, which listed me and Nick Roche as the creative team of one of the upcoming arcs.

I've been sitting on this news since last year's SDCC. Writing Masters of the Universe is a big deal for me, one of the iconic fictional worlds still on my bucket list.

I cannot explain how much I loved He-Man when I was a kid. Here's photographic evidence that Castle Grayskull was never far from my side...

I wish I still had that kitsch deckchair!

More on my arc as it happens!

HAWK-GIRL SUMMER

I've written another DC Comics short for this year's summer special, the wonderfully titled Hawk-Girl Summer, which goes on sale on 29th July.

Here are the covers:

Summer has arrived—and so has your perfect juicy beach read. Hot off the presses, this collection of scorching new stories showcases the babes and bombshells of the DCU slaying the summer! Join Hawkgirl, Catwoman, Red Hood, Grace Choi, Thunder, Shining Knight, Kid Quick, and more as The Female Furies, dominate the beach, the boardwalk, and any bad guys in their way.

Keep watching the Cavletter for the reveal of which DC superhero I'm tackling this time (and with which artist too!)

All I can say is that the first few pages came through last week and it made my 90s comic-loving heart beat a little faster!

FIVE GOOD THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN APRIL

  1. The editor loved my first draft of Project: Avarice.
  2. I saw the Sam Kelly Trio at Downend Folk and Roots, another bargain of a night – just fifteen quid for three hours of jigs, songs and toe-tapping tunes! Check out the upcoming gigs here!
  3. I gave a guest lecture about writing for licenced media for students at the University of Cardiff's School of Journalism, Media and Culture – hopefully the first of many.
  4. I spotted this rather lovely review of my recent Solomon Kane story. That "Cavan Scott knows his stuff" apparently!
  5. I attended various days of the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival and wallowed in sword and sorcery splendour watching: Ladyhawke (much funnier than I remember), Legend of the 8 Samurai (bonkers), Clan of the Cave Bear (more engaging than I expected), Excalibur (as sublime as always) and Highlander (still a cheesy fave, 40 years after I first saw it!) Lordy, I wish I could spend my days making fantasy movies.

CURRENTLY READING

PAGANS by James Alistair Henry: A murder mystery in an alternate British Isles that was never unified or Christianised, where a pair of Saxon and Celt detectives have to put aside their prejudices to find a ritual killer.

SYLLABUS: NOTES FROM AN ACCIDENTAL PROFESSOR by Lynda Barry: A gorgeous graphic guide to finding your own creative voice, based on her Writing the Unthinkable course. I've already picked up a couple of new creative habits!

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO

TALKING CLASSICS: THE SHOCK OF THE OLD by Mary Beard: The renowned historian sets out what links the modern world to the ancient, and also highlights why, at times, the past is an alien world. My first Beard book, and I'm thinking it won't be my last.

CURRENTLY WATCHING

THE CAPTURE: The BBC's twisty-turny techno-thriller gets even better with season 3!

That's it for now!

Until next time, look after yourself and each other.
